An old engraving of ‘Urban’s tempering machine’ of the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The term hardened steel is often used for a medium or high carbon steel that has been given heat treatment and then quenching followed by tempering. Here a hot steel plate is being lowered into a tank. Salted water is contained in a reservoir (top right) – a valve is opened and jets of water played against both sides of the plate. A pump (left) returns the water up to the reservoir. Tempering was often confused with quenching – the term was used to describe both.
