Nine-teen hundred years have come and gonesince he was born in Bethlehem—nine-teen hundred years of at least nominalworship of his name; and yet a commonmurder in a little unfamiliar Easterncitj7 has sufficed to precipitate four hun-dred million fellow-Christians into themost awful, fratricidal strife of all is the meaning of it all? Is Chris-tianity a failure ? Has Christ died in. vain WHAT OF CHRISTIAN CULTURE? There is no irreverence in these ques-tions which, I think, every thoughtfulperson is asking himself today. Theyare not the flippant sneers of the un-believer who is glad to find Christianityat fault; but the sincere seeking aftertruth of those who feel as if they hadbeen startled out of a dream of falsesecurity. The foundations have been shaken. Theplanks of culture and civilization uponwhich we had seemed to be standing sosecurely, have all at once given waybeneath our feet. The platitudes ofChristian culture, enlightenment,progress, international concilationhave been shriveled in the flame of factsso obvious that we wonder we could everhave missed seeing- them. The humannature which we had been glorifying- ashalf-divine has suddenly dropped itsmask, and lo! the devil and all his angelssit grinning through its eyes. The struc-ture of society which had seemed sosecure has broken up, and we are adrifton a sea of uncertainty with no
