South-western Arabian Peninsula from space. North is at bottom. The Red Sea (lower right) narrows to a strait leading to the Gulf of Aden (upper centre to far left). These waters separate Yemen (centre) and Saudi Arabia, on the Arabian Peninsula, from Africa. On the Peninsula, mountainous areas (dark brown) rise from arid coastal plains (light brown) and descend to the arid sands of the Rub' al Khali Desert (lower left). Ripples in the sand are large wind-blown dunes. Northern Somalia lies across the Gulf of Aden. Across the Red Sea, lies Ethiopia's Danakil Depression (triangular area, upper right), forming part of Africa's Great Rift Valley. Taken in 1993, from the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
