Hong Kong 'On water People' (Tanka) carved wooden Shrine effigies and gods .Hong Kong Folk art. Effigies and religious wooden statues. Ancestral effigies and religious shrines were carried on every boat, important to the boat dwellers. Traditionally illiterate with Dan Gā Wá a non-scripted language, these effigies were as important as the written memorialising tablets of those on land. Religious and ancestral carving sit side by side in on boat shrines. Ancestors are often shown with a foot on a dragon and the other on a lion to show their strength. These hand-carved statues were made at ‘Idol shops’.
