He was the son of a Methodist clergyman,and was brought up to work on a farm. He became connected with thevillage newspaper,and studied engi-neering. In 1811he was associated inthe publication ofthe New YorkState Mechanic, inAlbany, and in 1843served on the Hart-ford Journal. Hethen went to Chilli-cothe, Ohio, wherehe was employedon the Scioto Ga-zette, and alsoserved as clerk ofthe Ohio Legislat-ure. In the meantime he became associated with Dr. Edwin H. Davis,who was engaged in exploring the mounds in the vicin-ity, and for several years he investigated these pre-historic remains under the direction of Dr. Davis. Theresults were published in Ancient Monuments of theMississippi Valley (Washington, 1848), and formedthe first volume of the Smithsonian Contributions. to Knowledge. During 1848 Mr. Squier examinedthe ancient deposits of New York State, under theauspices of the New York Historical Society, publish-ing his report through the Smithsonian Institution, asAboriginal Monuments of the State of New York(1850). He was appointed special ehargi iVaffaires toall the Central American States in 1849, and negoti-ated treaties with Nicaragua, Honduras, and San Sal-vador. In 1853 he returned to Central America assecretary of the Honduras Interoceanic Railway Com-pany, and he subsequently visited Europe in behalfof that enterprise, lie was appointed United Statescommissioner to settle claims in Peru, where for twoyears (1863- 65; he made exhaustive researches con-cerning the remains of the Incas, and took numerousp
