Battle of Montcontour, French Religious Wars, 3 October 1569 (1570). Artist: Jacques Tortorel

Battle of Montcontour, French Religious Wars, 3 October 1569 (1570). The Huguenots under Gaspard Coligny (1519-1572) took heavy losses during their defeat by the Catholics under Henry, Duc d'Anjou (1551-1580), who became Henry III of France in 1574. They are shown retreating in the right foreground. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights.
