Horst Stormer. Portrait of the German physicist Horst L. Stormer (born 1949). Educated in Germany, he worked at Bell Labs, USA, from 1977. In 1982 he discovered (with Tsui) the fractional quantum Hall effect. This causes electrons in a semiconductor to behave like a quantum fluid at low temperatures under a high magnetic field. This work earned Stormer (with Tsui and Laughlin) the 1998 Nobel Prize for Physics. Photographed in 1999.
