Portrait, Blackfriars Bridge to Trinity Footbridge, tall modern buildings reflecting in, rising above River Irwell, Manchester

The cantilever, spar cable-stayed Trinity Footbridge, designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava, opened in 1994 at a cost of £ million. The River Irwell, in industrial times, was heavily polluted by factory effluent and raw sewage. As with Salford Quays, the one-time location of Manchester Docks, the river has undergone clean-up and regeneration with a riverside walkway, a popular lunch-break location, on the Salford bank (right of shot). The Edge Apartments, rising on the Salford bank of the river (right foreground) offer short stay service accomodation for visitors to Manchester. Portrait shot downstream from Blackfriars Bridge.
