Before reaching theGoebeng Bridge and turning intoRajoen, one obtains some fine views ofthe distant ranges and the placid sur-face of the winding river (Brantas),which here and there is studded withbeautiful lilies; stately bungalows facethe water, and occasionally an out-rigger sweeps past, the rhythmical clickof the oars falling pleasantly on theear. This quarter is considered thehealthiest portion of the city, and manyfine modern -S^illas line the cool, pleasant. Acrossthe river to the east lies the small suburb of Goebeng where the UpperTown Railway Station is situated on the main line from Batavia. The Kepoetran Road takes us back towards the city, past theTelephone Exchange, and here we branch off westwards along a finethoroughfare, the Embong Malang, and pay a visit to the native quarterof Boeboetan by taking the Blaoeran Road, turning off the EmbongMalang to the right. The village and the native industries establishedhere are most interesting. On the Embong Malang some old Chinesecemeteries are observed, and also numerous modern dwellings. Pro-ceeding northward we issue upon the Passar Besar which leads us alongits course to the railway crossing where a turn to the right, past thelarge artillery barracks, the Protestant Church and an old fortress, brings 6
