Laura Carmichael played Lady Edith Crawley Edith’s ochre coloured day dress and hat was worn whilst dining at Rules Restaurant in Covent Garden. This outfit was seen in episode 7 when she had just met Charles Gregson in London. Back at Downton Abbey the family is still in mourning for Sybil’s death. “I wanted Edith to wear a strong colour as Rules restaurant is very dark, also I wanted the colour to signify a rebirth and a possible new life for Edith. She has seen so much death and sadness that the world Gregson has opened her eyes to, one were she could potentially earn her own money and live a new life away from the shadow of Mary, is of huge excitement to her so she abandoned the dark muted colours of mourning”. Caroline McCall The style is one which Laura Carmichael suits very well, the dropped waist of the top suggests where waistlines will head into the 20's, the overly draped fabric is typical of the period. This dress was made from silk crepe, which was dyed and trimmed, with original trim from a dress which had perished. The hat band has beautiful original trim.
