Millions of years ago, where now there are hills, Etruscan and Roman finds, the medieval city and the Medici fortress, there was the sea. The expanse of water has, in fact, left the footprint of its passage through the fossil shells visible in the stones of the old town, in salt deposits and alabaster rocks.
