The fruits and fruit trees of America; or, the culture, propagation, and management, in the garden and orchard, of fruit trees generally; with descriptions of all the finest varieties of fruit, native and foreign, cultivated in this country . pretty firmly over the wholewound. Fig. 10, commencing at the bottom, andleaving the bud, and the footstalk of the leafonly exposed to the light and air. Common shield budding, Fig. 11, practised inall gardens in Europe, differs from the foregoingonly in one respect—the removal of the slice ofw^ood contained in the bud. This is taken outwith the point of the knife, holding the bud orshield by the leaf stalk, with one hand, insertingthe knife under the wood at the lower extremity, and then raising and drawing out the wood bybending it upwards and downwards, with a slightjerk, until it is loosened from the bark; alwaystaking care that a small portion of the wood re-mains behind to fill up the hollow at the base orheart of the bud. The bud thus prepared is in-serted precisely as before described. The American variety of shield budding isfound greatly preferable to the European mode,at least for this climate. Many sorts of fiuit trees, especially Plums and Cherries, nearly mature Fig. la. Fig. 9. Americanshield budding.
