Midthufan, the summit of the stratovolcano Snaefellsjokull. Midthufan was covered in glacial ice and snow until 2012, when, following recent glacial retreat, it has become ice free towards the end of the summer. It is a fragment of the volcanic crater rim, that has been eroded away, revealing complex strata that will give geologists more information on this volcano, which last erupted some 1800 years ago. Snaefellsjokull first erupted some 700,000 years ago and has been capped with a glacier for much of that time. It is famous as the entrance to the centre of the Earth in Jules Verne's \Journey to the Centre of the Earth\"."
