Careful attention to the history of thepatient with particular reference to theetiological influence of the chronic in-toxications arising from alcohol, syphilis,lead, rheumatism, malaria, etc., will givethe largest opportunity for correct treat-ment during the primary stages, and far in advance of the time when the diseaseis confessedly unmanageable by reasonof the secondary complications—cardiac,vasorenal, or cerebral.
