São Francisco Church interior Salvador da Bahia Brazil

CHURCH AND CONVENT OF SAINT FRANCIS (SÃO FRANCISCO) Historic Summary CLOISTER Work of the cloister was inaugurated in 1729 and finished in 1794. The tiles carne from Portugal between 1743 and 1746. THE CHURCH The Church of St. Francis is one of the best models of the first age of the Baroc style, or as it is usually called “the colonial style”. The carvings are completely covered with gold leaf and gives the impression of a Golden Church. The decoration gives the impression of profuse exuberance of arabesque forms whose style and unity is only interrupted by straight lines of the ceiling. The tiled panels that cover the back wall represent scenes from the life of St. Francis. As we enter the Great Chapel we see the flooring of polished stone in various colors, looking like a carpet, that came from Portugal in 1738. The tiles, that depict scenes of the life of St. Francis were made in Lisbon by Bartolomeu Antunes in 1737. The main altar has undergone some changes. St. Francis occupies the throne on the High Altar since 1930. The Sanctuary Lamp that hangs from the ceiling is made of Silver and dates back to 1758. The paintings in magnificent ornate frames decorating the ceiling of the church are by a gifted artist according to information of the time. The pulpits have all the grace and splendor of the Baroc style. On the Altar of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, similar to that of St. Anthony, this beautiful image is attributed to Manoel I. da Costa. The three side chapels are dedicated to Saint Ann, Saint Luzia and Saint Efigenia. The Choir of the Friars is supported by two stone columns. The chairs and the Lectern are made from Jacarandá and are the work of the artist Frei Luis. There are 8 oil paintings that are not signed. At the centre of the Choir Grill there is a stand with the Image of the Crucified Christ. It was only in 1805 that the towers were covered with white tiles.
