Mal-alignment of a joint maybe a secondary cause, such as would occur inhallux valgus. In thisinstance the deep seat-ed bursa would be af-fected. Bursitis wouldhardly develop from thisalone, however, and theexciting cause is foundin the pressure of foot-gear or some other in-jury to the part. Location. As bursasacs are only found covering a bony prominence, or inter-posed between the sheaths of tendons and muscles, or be-tween these structures and the skin, serving in each capacityto prevent physiologic wear and tear, bursitis occurring inthe foot will be found in these locations. The first and fifth metatarsophalangeal joints (meta-tarsophalangeal bursitis); the interphalangeal joints of. ACUTE BUESITIS BURSITIS 265 the toes (interphalangeal bursitis); the posterior and outersurfaces of the os calcis (retrocalcaneal bursitis); and thetarsometatarsal region on the dorsum of the foot (dorsalbursitis) are the principal sites of occurrence. The baseof the fifth metatarsal is also a spot over which bursalinflammation will occasionally develop. Pathology. The pathology of bursitis is primarily thatof any inflammation. Due to trauma, the parts are subjectedto a severe irritation which causes an engorgement of bloodin that location. Serous infiltration of the tissues takesplace and the functional activity of the sac is increased. Ma-terials from the blood for the production of synovia, are se-creted in abnormal amounts, and in consequence the sac be-comes distended from the superabundance of fluid. In timethis fluid must find some outlet, for synovia is secreted sorapidly that the lymphatic system cannot absorb the outlet must naturally devel
