A vintage sewing machine, made in Germany for the British market, and carrying the mark of Hamburg distributor J Silberberg

At one time, many of the sewing machines sold in Britain were imported from Germany, including this machine, one of many that passed through the hands of distributor J Silberberg of Hamburg. They obtained them from a number of different manufacturers and sold them under a bewildering variety of brand names. ‘Gloriana’ is a name associated with the products of one of their known suppliers, Anker-Werke of Bielefeld. It dates, perhaps, from the 1920s.
