Chiloe, the archipelago to the south of Chile's lake district, is a largely rural backwater. Although large scale salmon farming has brought new prosperity to its largest island, Isla Grande, the small coastal villages still scratch out a living from fishing and from building wooden boats by traditional methods. These are fishing boats in the village of San Juan.
