Edward the Martyr (962 – 978) was King of England from 975 until murdered in 978. He was the eldest son of King Edgar the Peaceful but on Edgar's death, some supported Edward's claim to be king, others his younger half-brother Æthelred the Unready. Edward was chosen as king. He was murdered in the evening of 18 March 978, while visiting Ælfthryth and Æthelred, probably at or near the mound on which the ruins of Corfe Castle now stand. There are several possible motives behind Edward's killing with Æthelred as the main suspect.

Edward the Martyr (962 – 978) was King of England from 975 until he was murdered in 978. He was the eldest son of King Edgar the Peaceful but on Edgar's death, the leadership of England was contested, with some supporting Edward's claim to be king and others supporting his younger half-brother Æthelred the Unready. Edward was chosen as king and was crowned by his main clerical supporters, the archbishops Dunstan of Canterbury and Oswald of Worcester. He was murdered in the evening of 18 March 978, while visiting Ælfthryth and Æthelred, probably at or near the mound on which the ruins of Corfe Castle now stand. There are several possible motives behind Edward's killing with Æthelred as the main suspect.
