Petroglyphs/rock art carved into an outcrop of Tuff at the edge of the Mesa near Tsi Ping ruined Pueblo, Canones, Abiquiu, Rio Arriba County, new mexico, USA. Possibly snake or water symbols pecked into the Tuff rock outcrops. Anasazi pueblo ruins on Mesa top overlooking Canones. Also known as Tsiping and Tsi-p'in-owinge. Means 'Village at Flaking Stone Mountain'. Abundant supply of chert for stone tools nearby. Ancestral home of the Tewa pueblos. Built circa 1275Ad, abandoned by 1450AD. At its peak it is estimated that circa 1000 people lived here. The builfings were made of Tuff blocks cut form the mesa top. 17 kivas, some carved out of the rock, some including the great kiva were built partly into the bedrock and partly above ground from stone blocks. A tew shrine on the site is still used by the various Tewa Pueblos. On US Forestry Service land, part of Santa Fe national Forest. Permit required to visit.
