It remains for us, before going over into the GreatBasin of the Continent, to consider the industrialinterests, growth, prosperity and promise of Color-ado. These have only been incidentally alluded toso far; but they deserve special exhibition. Thediscovery of gold among the sands of the mountainvalleys in 1859 was the beginning of the presentState. Thousands flocked across the Plains in thatyear in eager scramble for the fabled wealth. For-tune ebbed and flowed with them as in all miningventures; the few won, many struggled and sufferedfor a bare subsistence, nearly as many more lost allthey brought with them, even their hopes, and went THE MARCH OF An Indian Encampmknt and a Miners Cabin.
