The Newport Bridge was opened in 1934 It was designed by Mott hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long To permit the passage of shipping the 260 feet long 1530 ton steel centre span was designed so that it can be raised with the aid of counter balance weights and two 325 horsepower motors to a height of 120 feet The two towers are 182 feet high and founded on concrete filled cast iron cylinders sunk to a depth of 86 feet
