An anole, Anolis roquet, found on the Caribbean island of Martinique (1984); most species of anole occur on the islands of the West Indies but a few also occur in the mainland forest. There is a great variation in colour and pattern within this species; six subspecies are known although this specimen has not been identified into one. Anoles are the largest genus in the family of iguanids; they are slender and elegant-looking climbing lizards with well-developed adhesive toes.
