Female hormone system. 1 of 2. Diagram showing the female endocrine system working to create the feeling of being in love. When a person falls in love, their thoughts and emotions (red spot in the prefrontal cortex) are governed by the hormones released. Dopamine (pink spot in the substantia nigra), norepinephrine (dark blue spot in the adrenal glands) and serotonin (orange spot in the raphe nuclei) are released during the attraction phase. High levels of oestrogen (turquoise spot in the ovaries) are released during the lustful stage. Oxytocin, vasopressin and endorphins (not shown) are responsible for the long-term bonding afterwards. See P750/172 for the hormone system involved in bonding.
