Blue-backed manakin (Chiroxiphia pareola) male displaying, from La galerie des oiseaux du Cabinet d'histoire naturelle du Jardin du roi, 1834 edition, written by Louis Pierre Vieillot, with plates by Paul Louis Oudart. Vieillot, a French ornithologist, was the first to describe and name many American bird species. Several birds, including the Virginia rail, the cedar waxwing and the house wren, still bear the scientific names he gave them.
