Many men eminent in theorder have been part of the place—none ofthem more interesting, perhaps, than FatherJohn Du Bois, who came thither in 1792. Hewas an emigre of the French Revolution, inwhich his old classmates at the Colleo-e ofLouis-le-Grand, Camille Desmoulins andRobespierre, figured so largely, and he after-wards wore a mitre. In 1824, Lafayette included Frederick in hisgreat tour of rejoicing, and was accorded theusual welcoming parades, speeches, dinner andball. Only a few years ago a beautiful, blindold lady, who had been a beautiful, bright-eyedyoung wife, used to tell of her noble guest. Shewas a favorite granddaughter of Governor John-son, and in her girlhood had helped LouisaJohnson, the wife of John Ouincy Adams, todispense the unpretentious hospitality of theWhite House. Mr. Adams, she said, got upand built
