Parts of the Stamen and the Pistil. — The stamen usually consists of a hollow portion, the anther (Fig. 149, a), borne on a stalk called the filament (Fig. 149, f), which is often lacking. Inside the anther is a pow- dery or pasty substance called pollen or microspores (Sect. 374). The pistil usually consists of a small chamber, the ovary, which contains the ovules, macrospores (Sect. 374), or rudimentary seeds, a slen- der portion or stalk, called the style, and at the top of this a ridge, knob, or point called the stigma. These parts are all shown in Fig. 150. In many pistils the stigma is borne directly on the ovary. 215.
