In the open air, in cool houses and in early forcing houses their culture is annually on the increase. Several Guernsey growers have turned their attention in a very whole-hearted manner to the cultivation of carnations and find them a profitable line. The bulb exports of 1906, princi- pally narcissi, were heavier than in any previous year, the bulk of the consign- ments going to America, Holland and England. No doubt Holland bought largely for transhipment to other coun- tries, in addition to buying tons of small bulbs to grow on for a year or so. Guernsey covers about 40 square miles and it is estimated that there are 3,000 market growers in the island. The National Potato Society has got on its legs for another year with W. P. Wright as chairman. At the adjourned annual meeting leading firms, such as Sutton & Sons, and Dobbie & Co., coun- seled the winding up of the society. It is probable that trials of potatoes will be conducted at Wye, Kent, and an autumn exhibition held there instead of in Lon- don, the agricultural college at Wye having held out special inducements to the society to adopt this course.
