He showed his repugnance forslavery in the Democratic Convention held in Pittsburgh in 1849. where heoffered a resolution against the extension of slavery, which concluded withthese remarkable words: Esteeming it a violation of States rights to carryit (slavery) beyond State limits, we deny the power of any citizen to extendthe area of bondage beyond the present dimension; nor do we consider it apart of the Constitution that slavery should forever travel with the advanc-ing column of our territorial progress. Holding these strong views he naturally became one of the founders ofthe Republican party, and he delivered at the Chinese Museum, in Philadel-phia, at tbe beginning of the electoral campaign in 1856, his celebrated speechupon the power of Congress over slavery in the territories.
