The condensing plant was supplied by Mirrlees & Watson, and consists of a surface condenser, a twin Edwards air pump, and a motor-driven circulating pump. The condenser has acooling surface of 1800 sq. ft., and is designed to deal with18,000 lbs. of steam per hour. The tubes are held in place inthe brass tube plates by means of screwed ferrules with internalflanges, to prevent creeping. They are Y\ in. outside diameter, and are tinned inside and out. The air pump cylinder measures 13 ins. diameter and , and the normal speed is 150 r. p. m. It is driven by an. The crank pin end of theconnecting rod is made of solid gunmetal, lined with valve plates and valves are of gunmetal throughout, thevalves themselves being of the Kingborn type. The circulating water is handled by a centrifugal pump, andis designed to deal with 19,000 lbs. of steam per hour. Thepump casing is of cast-iron, with Delta metal blades. The shaftis of similar material with solid gunmetal glands fitted withself-oiling arrangements. The motor driving this pump is ofthe semi-enclosed multipolar continuous-current type, designed to operate at an average pressure of 525 volts. The circulatingwater is taken from the turbine race through a cast-irongrating, and is returned to the race at a lower point after pass-ing through the condenser. Fig. 18 shows the general lay outof the condensing plant. The discharge from the co
