C13th painted wooden effigy of Robert Curthose in the presbytery of Gloucester cathedral. Robert Duke of Normandy was the eldest son of William the Conquerer who distinguished himself at the first Crusade. He died in 1134 after being held prisoner in Cardiff Castle for 28 years by his younger brother King Henry I. The effigy dates from around 1260, the painted wooden mortuary chest from the late C15th. Robert wears a crown and sleeveless red surcoat over chain mail.
