Berlin Wall monument Bernauer Strasse. Berlin, Mitte, 2005. --- No releases available. --- History: One place, that has become in a most particular way a symbol of the inhumanity of the Berlin Wall, is the Bernauer Straße. Due to its special border position - the houses on the south side of the street were situated in the Soviet Sector, but their pavements belonged to the French sector - therefore the building of the Wall happened here in a very dramatic way: In August 1961, when the border troops closed the windows with bricks in the ground floor, some people still tried to flee through the windows of the upper floors into the Western part of the city. In those days, the pictures of these events went around the world. Later the houses where evacuated by force and demolished in 1965, only the street facades of the ground floor remained and were used until 1979 as a border wall. --- Monument: The Bernauer Straße is the only place in Berlin, where a segment of the border fortification is kept completely with all its installations and barrier elements - with border wall, death strip, patrol track, street lamps and Hinterland Wall. The erection of the Wall memorial took place in 1994. The implemented design of the Stuttgart architects Kohlhoff and Kohlhoff cuts through the original border with two steel walls each six meter high and distinguishes a 64 meter long Wall segment as memorial. The outer walls of the steel walls are corroded and allow associations to the metaphor of the "Iron Curtain". The inner sides consist of polished stainless steel and are supposed to reflect the short border segment into infinity, to symbolise the former extension of the border fortification.
