Common to abundant as a weed tree in woods, abandoned fields, and waste places southward from the Rock River. The root bark yields an aromatic volatile oil (oil of sassafras), the pith a mucilage. The oil is used as an aromatic stimulant and flavoring agent, the mucilage as a demul- cent. SATUREJA HORTENSIS L. Sum- mer savory. Labiatae. The herb collected. Formerly grown extensively in gardens; not known to have escaped and become established in the state. Contains a volatile, aromatic oil.
