Contact lens on a fingertip, ready to be placed on the eye. Contact lenses are worn directly on the surface of the eyeball to correct imperfect vision. They work by replacing the shape of the surface of the cornea (front part of the eye) with their own shape, which is designed to compensate for the focusing defect in the eye. They can either be soft (comfortable, but wear out quickly) or hard (longer lasting, but more uncomfortable). They have to be stored and rinsed in special cleaning solutions inside a container (seen behind finger), to prevent them carrying infections onto the surface of the eye. The container is labelled 'L' for the left eye's lens.
