THE HEART AND ITS DISEASES. CHAPTER I. PHYSIOLOGICAL ANATOMY OF THE HEART. The heart is a hollow, involuntar}^ muscle, containing four cavities: a right auricle, a right ventricle, aleft auricle and a left ventricle. It is enveloped ina fibro-serous membrane called the pericardium, andis situated with its centre a little to the left of themesian line of the thorax, about one-third of it beingto the right, and two-thirds to the left of that apex points downwards, forwards and to the left, asfar as the filth intercostal space, and about an inch tothe right of a line running vertically through the leftnipple while its base points upwards, backwards
