Arthroscopy of the knee. View of an arthroscope (type of endoscope) being used by an orthopaedic surgeon on a patient's knee joint. The surgical team view the procedure on the monitor. An arthroscope is a rigid steel tube containing optical fibres, a lens and light source, connected to a TV monitor. The tube is inserted through a small incision in the knee, giving the surgeon a view of the inside of the joint. Another small incision allows access for the surgical instruments which the surgeon manipulates remotely to remove or repair any damaged tissue. This is known as minimally-invasive or keyhole surgery.
