Emission nebula (NGC 3576), optical image. Emission nebulae are clouds of gas and dust that are ionised by radiation from hot stars within them, causing them to glow. This nebula lies in the constellation Carina. It contains several Bok globules, dark, dense dust clouds where stars are forming. Its shape, with characteristic arches, is caused by stellar winds from the stars within it.
