Portland-based scenographer and artist, 27 yr old Sophie Fretwell, couldn't have been more surprised when people started to tell her that they recognised a face that she'd painted on her recent Art Installation, 'The Light House'. With the exception of her mum, Sandra, who was painted as 'The Gardeners Saint' . . . they had all been invented and bore no resemblance to anyone, living or dead, so far as she knew. During the pandemic and the lockdowns, Sophie had asked Portland residents to think about the 'Saints' who had helped through the difficulties of the covid pandemic . Based on what people had told her, Sopie set about making 'The Light House', an Art installation with images of various 'Saints' painted in stained-glass style onto the clear panels. There were eight 'Saints' , in all: Gardeners , beekeepers, knitters, fishermen, Foodbank volunteers, potters, The saints of lockdown pets and the the saints of Lockdown mums. Surprisingly, it was the 'Knitter Saint' that people seemed to recognise. Wasn't that screenwriter, Dustin Lance Black, the husband of Plymothian Olympic diving gold-medalist Tom Daley ? Daley fans will know that diver, Tom, took up knitting and crocheting to keep calm during waits between dives. It worked for him and he turned out to be very good at it. He even has his own clothing line, featuring knitted garments and accessories. Sophies 'Light House' was exhibited in the Chiswell walled garden on Portland as part of the B-Side Festival and has just returned to the Fretwell family home on the Isle after being exhibited in the Moreton Walled Garden as part of Dorset Arts Weeks. There, her work was exhibited alongside esteemed artists and sculptors which was quite a thrill for her, at such a young age. Sophie is busy with new projects but, taking advantage of the sunny weather, her mum Sandra took a closer look. How odd that the husband of a celebrity 'knitter' should end up as Sophie's 'Knitter Saint'.
