Aortic valve congenital deformity. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan (left) and cardiac ultrasound scan (right) of the heart and the aorta in a 5

Aortic valve congenital deformity. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan (left) and cardiac ultrasound scan (right) of the heart and the aorta in a 58-year-old man with a congenital deformity of the aortic valve (red in CT scan; at centre of ultrasound scan). The aorta is the body's main artery, through which blood is pumped from the heart through the aortic valve and around the body. The aortic valve normally has three cusps or leaflets, but in a small proportion of people it has two cusps, a condition known as bicuspid aortic valve. This condition, which is present from birth, can have no effect, or it can lead to complications. Here, the valve is closed in the heart's diastolic phase. The heartbeat trace and the number of beats per minute are also shown.
