Sapling damaged by buck deer rubbing their antlers until the bark strips away. This kind of damage can kill trees
Buck deer will mark trees with glands on their foreheads, and their antlers can cause incidental damage to trees. However, more frequently, they rub the velvet off their antlers by this method as the rut approaches and their antlers become mature for the season. Deer will often come back to the same trees and the frequent rubbing can injure the tree to the point it can't recover.
