Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, Wales, UK, looking SE to the C13th ruins of Castell Dinas Brân on the hill beyond. Abbey founded 12 January 1201 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor the ruler of Powys with 13 Cistercian monks & several lay-brothers from the abbey of Strata Marcella near Welshpool. Named Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) after the C9th Eliseg's Pillar a little to the north. J. M. W. Turner made a pencil & watercolour painting of a similar view in 1794-95.
