Spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) drinking at a watering hole. This is the largest and most powerful of all the hyenas. It lives alone or in family groups, feeding on the carcasses of large herbivores. It is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in savannah and open grassland. In desert regions, it tends to forage over large distances on its own. Photographed in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, South Africa.
