Charact.—I>u]l) ovoid, with smooth membranous brown , frequently shooting in late autumn, awl-like at first, linearwhen fully grown. Stem two feet or less in height, partly covered byclasping I ayes, bearing two flowers. Spathe-valves loug, narrow,qoI much inflated. The flower, tour inches or so across, devoid ofdistinct perianth tube, is borne above tlie spathe-valves by a longpedicel, tin: ovary being in consequence often much ezserted. Fall 65 fiddle-shaped, having an orbicular blade, separated by marked con-striction from the long claw, which either spreads horizontally orforms, with its fellows, a funnel. Standards narrow, erect. Crestsof style large, quadrate. Capsule long, narrow; seed numerous,small, cubical or angular. Colour either a variable hue of purple(with a narrow orange signal on the blade of the fall) or pure yellow,or yellow blotched with purple. Time.—June. Hab.—South of France, Spain, Portugal,
