A nor-mal, healthy semen should show in the micro-scopic field, with a Hartnack objective 7 andocular 3, about 100 living spermatozoa. According to the relative numbers of the sper-matozoa two distinct pathological conditionsare recognized, namely, oligozodspermia and azo-ospermia. By oligozoospermia is understood amarked diminution in the number of sperma-tozoa, while azoospermia means their total ab- 128 Sterility and Impotence. sence. Oligozoospermia often occurs in ad-vanced age, yet it is found still more frequent-ly as a congenital condition in youth. Veryoften also it is found that the few spermatozoathat are secreted are, even in a perfectly freshstate, motionless and for the most part dead(Fig. 10). The commonest causes of oligozoo-. By these in-flammations is brought about sometimes com-plete and sometimes only partial obliteration ofthe vasa deferentia. The passage of the sper-matozoa from the testicles to the seminal vesi-cles becomes thereby very imperfect and scanty. Sterility and Impotence. 129 Not infrequently are found also, under themicroscope, numerous pus corpuscles, molecu-lar detritus, and spermatic crystals. Besides gonorrhoea! epididymitis, tuberculosisand new growths of the testicles may causeoligozoospermia as well as azoospermia. Theformer condition may pass gradually into thelatter. Very rarely does the reverse take place, although it is possible in the first year after epi-didym
