Flat-tailed Horned Lizard, an endangered species in the Sonoran Desert, is armed with sharp points on its head.

Flat-tailed Horned Lizard Phrynosoma mcallii Anza Borrego Desert State Park California United States 7 May Adult Phrynosomatidae With its cryptic coloration and flat body, the flat-tailed horned lizard is capable of disappearing on the desert floor. When a predator threatens, the lizard may run a short distance and then stop unexpectedly; it will then lie motionless and blend into the sand, leaving its predator befuddled. One of the few animals that can tolerate formic acid, deriving its nutrition from harvester ants.
