Berlin, Germany, 7th October 2014. 'My Right is your Right' support group staged a demonstration in Turmstrasse outside the LaGeSo centre to highlight the difficult registration procedures. Refugees addressed the crowd, entertainers sang and children had fun on a slide manned by volunteers. Berlin welcomes refugees but the city is struggling to process the crowds that arrive at the LaGeSo (Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales) centre every day. Tired travellers fight for Interview numbers and then wait for their number to appear. The lucky few pass through the centre quickly but many endure delays of days or weeks. Small tents spring up, blankets are spread and children unpack their meagre possessions. Civil servants and volunteers are working long hours to alleviate the situation and assist the sad arrivals. Food is distributed, medical tents are manned and people do care about the plight of these fragile people. It is clear, however, that there is an urgent need to accelerate or simplify the process. The applicants come from many countries and discontent simmers as refugees watch the board for their flashing number to appear. I spoke to several people who felt that the system was creating confusion as there is no clear numerical order on the eagerly watched 333 may preceed number 9. The day passes work the masses wait hopefully as Germany struggles to cope with the influx of desperate people.
