Kidney cancer. Light micrograph (LM) from a section of a Wilms' tumour (nephroblastoma). This is the most common renal tumour of childhood (20% of all childhood malignancies), it is highly responsive to treatment, with about 90% of patients surviving at least five years. It is an undifferentiated mesodermal tumour of the intermediate cell mass (primitive kidney tubules and mesenchymal cells). Present are clumps of small round malignant undifferentiated blastema cells (undifferentiaited cells) (purple) in a spindle cell stroma. Magnification: x 250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
