False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a fibroblast cell, one of three types of cell found in connective tissue which is responsible for the secretion and synthesis of collagen, elastin and reticulin precursors. The cell appears orange with a central, more darkly stained nucleus. Collagen fibres surrounding the cells are coloured pink. Connective tissue provides metabolic and structural support for other tissues and organs throughout the body. Rigid forms are bone and cartilage. Magnification: x1,500 at 35mm size.
