Fire-men had to listen with an ear to a receiver to getthe strokes, and as soon as this alarm was receivedthe number was tolled from a big bell in the top ofthe central station, and from there was taken up byevery church and public bell, so that the entirepopulation soon knew where the fire was located. The inhabitants gathered to welcome it,.among them a group of Indians. On its approachthe Indians were filled with dismay and fled to-the high ground in the rear of the village. Theyascribed supernatural powers to anything capableof ascending the river without the aid of sail oroar, breathing flame and smoke, believing it to bea monster.
