St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in Greenwich Village in New York
St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in Greenwich Village in New York on Saturday, February 13, 2010. The Catholic hospital has begun the process of laying off over 300 workers in order to remain in operation. The 160 year old West Village institution is $700 million in debt and has recently relied on state loans to meet its payroll. Housekeepers, orderlies, dietitians, managers and medical residents are slated to be laid off and the remaining staff was asked to take pay cuts of up to 25 percent. Workers from the unions representing nurses and other workers will be voting on whether to accept the cuts. (© Richard B. Levine)
